Armstrong Leaves For Nashville

In a hurry and without their uniforms, Armstrong High’s basketballers entrained for Nashville last night, seeking their fourth championship of the season.
Invited on Monday to the National Negro High School Tournament, Armstrong could not accept until 4 p.m. yesterday .There was not enough money in the athletic fund to finance the trip.
Yesterday afternoon, Principal Frank Gregory called a meeting of the school alumni organization. The old graduates passed the hat and came up with the right amount of money.
Coach Charlie Baltimore had two hours to round up his squad of nine and catch the southbound train.
They had to leave without their playing suits, because their equipment hadn’t arrived from Fayetteville N.C. where Armstrong won the State Teacher College scholastic tournament last weekend.
Principal Gregory met the trunks at Union Station last night and the dispatched them by air to Nashville where the tournament opens on Thursday.
Armstrong goes into the event with 19-3 record, and the championships of the Washington Negro Interhigh League, the South Atlantic High school League and the Fayetteville Invitational tournament.
Making the trip with Coach Baltimore are Jay Peterson, Avatus Stone, Gene Lawrence, Lewis Jackson, Walter Sturdivant, John Hobbs, Les Morgan, Al Wilson and Tom Spencer.
