He came from an area where segregation was a way of the land
Separate but unequal with your teachers and community, you knew where you stand
He developed skills as a student and athlete that turned out to be one of a kind
Eventually, Earl Lloyd would be one of three to break the BBall color line
He went to college at a CIAA school named West Virginia State
This proved to be one of the places that found out that this man was great
He put his team on his back, won the CIAA and didn't even mind
Eventually, Earl Lloyd would be one of three to break the BBall color line
In 1950, the NBA was ready to get the first couple of players in the league
Chuck Cooper, Nat Clifton & Mr. Lloyd, they provided plenty of intrigue
They all flourished as though they had been there for all of time
It was about time that Negroes broke the BBall color line
Things weren't always smooth. Lloyd spent lots of time by himself
When walking through his home, most of his loves are on his shelf
Jazz, books, politics, friends, BBall, the photographs all show the signs
That this man was important, one of three to break the BBall color line
A man of intrigue and dignity, especially if you get a chance to meet
With the life he's led, just get at his feet and take a seat
With all he's seen, places he's been, there's not a more decent gentleman you'll find
Not only a Naismith Hall of Famer, he was one of three to break the BBall color line
